5 itemsFebruary is the deepest winter month here. The Yunishigawa Onsen snow festival runs right through it, and the Nikko Yumoto ski slope and winter Oku-Nikko are both open. Tochiotome and Skyberry strawberries make a dependable bad-weather fallback.

5 itemsMarch is winter's tail. The Nikko Yumoto ski slope and winter Oku-Nikko hold on to month's end, but the Yunishigawa Onsen snow festival closes in the first days, so go early. Strawberries still run as a weather-proof backup.

9 itemsApril switches back outdoors. The Ashikaga wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park only comes on after mid-month, so an early-April trip misses the headline. The Kinugawa river-boat run, Nikko-Kinugawa glamping and Tochigi SC home games all open, and strawberries continue.

9 itemsMay is the back half of the wisteria window: Ashikaga Flower Park's great wisteria wraps up around the middle of the month. The Kinugawa boat run, glamping and Tochigi SC home games all continue, and strawberry season closes out here.

6 itemsJune is the rainy season, so build in a wet-weather plan. The theme is rivers and farm produce: ayu opens on the Kinugawa and Nakagawa, Tochigi two-row barley is in, and the boat run and glamping keep going but depend on the sky.
July
6 itemsJuly brings peak heat, so pull the itinerary toward the Kinugawa gorge and higher ground. The Kinugawa boat run is the obvious way to cool off, ayu is in season, and Tochigi two-row barley finishes at month's end. Check glamping units for air conditioning.
August
8 itemsAugust is the busiest and hottest month, so book rooms early. The Utsunomiya fireworks light up the Kinugawa riverbank, and the free gorge fireworks at the Kinutateiwa suspension bridge start now and run into autumn. Nasu shine muscat opens and ayu continues.
September
7 itemsSeptember hands summer over to autumn. Nasu shine muscat and grapes hit their stride, ayu closes out its season, and the gorge fireworks at the Kinutateiwa bridge still run as an evening add-on. Typhoon season isn't over, so keep outdoor plans flexible.

6 itemsOctober is foliage month, and Nikko-area roads and rooms tighten, so book ahead. The Kinugawa boat run is the best way to see the gorge from the water; Nasu grapes last until mid-month, and the bridge fireworks finish in early October.

5 itemsNovember closes the outdoor block: the Kinugawa boat run, Nikko-Kinugawa glamping and Tochigi SC home games all finish by month's end, so schedule them now rather than in December. Motegi yuzu and yuzu sweets begin, with late foliage lower down.

5 itemsDecember is a changeover month: the Nikko Yumoto ski slope and winter Oku-Nikko only open from mid-month, so an early-December trip gets no snow activities. Strawberry season starts and Motegi yuzu continues, so the second half covers both.
