Seasonal windows and dated events, month by month. Entry pages are in Traditional Chinese; event names appear in their original Japanese.

January

0 items

January is deep snow season and the calendar lists nothing for Toyama this month, with the mountain routes outside their operating window. Treat it as a slow stay-in-one-place trip and allow extra time for winter travel.

February

0 items

February is another blank month here, still mid-winter with the high country out of season. Toyama works better as a one-night stop for seafood and hot springs than as the anchor of a trip.

March

2 items

March is a transition month: the first half still reads as winter, and only in the final third of the month do the Hotaruika Museum season and the Matsukawa river cruise begin. Schedule toward month-end, or bring another anchor for the trip.

April

7 items

April flips Toyama on: the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kurobe Gorge Railway and the Tateyama highland hotels all enter their season, firefly squid is still running and white shrimp appears. Pack winter layers for the high ground; the Matsukawa cruise ends mid-month.

May

6 items

May gives the fullest overlap of mountain and coast: the Alpine Route and Kurobe Gorge Railway are running, the firefly squid season closes at month's end, and white shrimp is on menus. Book early around Japan's long holiday.

June

5 items

June brings the rainy season, but the Alpine Route, the Kurobe Gorge Railway, Mikurigaike and white shrimp are all in season, with thinner crowds. Mountain weather turns fast, so keep an indoor or city fallback in the plan.

July

5 items

July opens the summer holiday and the lowlands turn muggy, which is exactly why the altitude sells: the Alpine Route, Kurobe Gorge Railway, Mikurigaike and the highland hotels are all open. Book rooms well ahead.

August

5 items

August is peak heat and peak holiday, with the full summer set open — Alpine Route, Kurobe Gorge Railway, Mikurigaike, highland hotels, white shrimp. The real variable is crowds and pricing, so shift the mountain leg earlier or later if your dates allow.

September

6 items

Owara Kaze-no-Bon in Yatsuo falls at the start of September and is the one thing worth building dates around; nearby rooms fill fast. Otherwise the Alpine Route and Kurobe Gorge Railway run as usual, and typhoon season is not over.

October

6 items

October starts the autumn colour, working from the top down: the Alpine Route and Kurobe Gorge Railway show it first, while Shogawa Gorge only turns late in the month. Aim for month-end to catch both, and pack warm layers.

November

6 items

November closes the mountain season: the Alpine Route, the Kurobe Gorge Railway and the Tateyama highland hotels all end their operating window at month's end, so this is the last chance of the year. Shogawa Gorge colour sits in the first half.

December

0 items

December is empty on this calendar and the mountain side has closed for the year. Snow-country routine takes over, so treat Toyama as a short indoor-and-hot-spring stop rather than the centrepiece, and save the mountains for spring.
