January is quiet: no major festivals, so the city itself carries the trip. The one seasonal draw is the Fukuyoshi oyster huts in Itoshima, winter-only and worth the trip out to the coast. An easy month for bookings.

February stays in winter mode with no headline events. The Itoshima oyster huts are still in season and are the one thing worth a trip out of the city; otherwise plan around food and indoor days. Rooms are easy to get.

March straddles two seasons: the Itoshima oyster huts near the end of their run, and Nishi Park entering cherry-blossom season late in the month. Bloom timing shifts every year, so don't hang the whole trip on it.

April is the easiest month to plan. Nishi Park catches the tail of the cherry blossoms, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is in flower all month, and the Yame tea fields green up at the end of it. Stable pre-rainy-season weather, so outdoor days hold.

May is the most crowded month. Hakata Dontaku packs central Fukuoka over Golden Week, so book far ahead or plan around it. Quieter alternatives sit outside the city: the Yame tea fields, and cormorant fishing at Harazuru Onsen, which opens late in the month.

June is rainy season, the riskiest month for outdoor plans and the emptiest for festivals. Cormorant fishing at Harazuru Onsen is the one thing in season, and an onsen night is weather-proof. Cheap and uncrowded, if you keep expectations low.

July belongs to Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which runs through the first half of the month and tightens rooms across the city, so book early. The heat is serious; build in afternoon breaks. Harazuru Onsen is the inland escape.

August means extreme heat and typhoon season, so keep daytime plans light. The Kanmon Strait fireworks are the anchor: allow extra time for crowds and the trip back, and don't schedule an early departure the next morning.

Early September still carries typhoon risk, so keep plans changeable; the second half settles. The Yame Fukushima lantern puppet theatre runs a very short window, so lock the date before booking. Harazuru's cormorant fishing closes out this month.

October is the most forgiving month: comfortable weather, and outdoor plans that actually hold. The Miare Festival at Munakata Taisha opens the month, and the Itoshima oyster huts start up mid-month. Book early around the public holidays.

November is autumn-colour month, centred on Raizan Sennyoji, whose window is narrow and crowded in the second half, so pick your date and start early. The Itoshima oyster huts overlap, so the two can share one day outside the city.

December is an eating month, with the Itoshima oyster huts at their peak. The Fukuoka International Marathon takes over central streets on race day, so allow extra transit time or head out of town. Year-end prices climb: book early.
