3 itemsJanuary in Yamaguchi is essentially fugu season. Shimonoseki fugu and the hotpot finished with rice porridge are reason enough for a dedicated trip. Winter weather on the Sea of Japan side is unstable, so keep cross-region transfers loose.
February
3 itemsFebruary keeps the fugu season going, with lodging and popular restaurants easier to book once the New Year crowds clear. Outdoor draws are thin and daylight is short, so build around food and indoor time rather than long sightseeing days.
March
4 itemsMarch is a switchover month: Shimonoseki fugu and fugu hotpot wind down while the SL Yamaguchi steam train restarts later in the month. In spring these last days are the only chance to combine both, so book seats first.
April
2 itemsApril is cherry blossom season, and Tokiwa Park peaks early in the month, so front-load the trip if blossoms matter. The SL Yamaguchi steam train is running by then and pairs well with the park. Bloom timing shifts with the weather.
May
2 itemsMay offers the most reliable walking weather of the year. The Hagi Ware Festival turns the pottery town into a full-scale market worth traveling for, and the SL Yamaguchi steam train is running too. Arrive early if you plan to shop seriously.
June
1 itemsJune brings the rainy season and Yamaguchi goes quiet; the SL Yamaguchi steam train is the only fixed item. If you come, build around rail travel, indoor stops and food, with a wet-weather backup. Thin crowds and easy lodging are the payoff.
July
1 itemsEarly July is still rainy season; once it lifts, the heat makes long daytime walking unrealistic. The SL Yamaguchi steam train is the one fixed item, so let the ride carry the day and push sightseeing to early morning and evening.
August
4 itemsAugust is the densest month and mostly after dark: Kanmon Strait fireworks, the Yanai goldfish lanterns, night opening at Tokuyama Zoo, plus the running steam train. Heat and the Obon holidays make transport and lodging tightest, so book early.
September
2 itemsSeptember is still typhoon season, so leave room to reschedule, though the heat eases late in the month. Iwakuni lotus root comes into season and the SL Yamaguchi steam train still runs. Better as one leg of a trip than the whole thing.
October
5 itemsOctober is the easiest month to plan here: Shimonoseki fugu reopens, fugu hotpot returns to menus, Iwakuni lotus root is in season, and the SL Yamaguchi steam train still runs. From this month you can eat all of it and ride the train too.
November
5 itemsNovember is foliage season and the last month of the SL Yamaguchi steam train's season, so don't push it to December. Shimonoseki fugu, fugu hotpot and Iwakuni lotus root all overlap, as in October. Book lodging before fixing the route.
December
3 itemsDecember narrows to fugu: Shimonoseki fugu and fugu hotpot are at their peak, and that alone justifies the trip. Outdoor options are thin and daylight short, so lean on city time and food, and reserve ahead around the year-end holidays.
