6 itemsJanuary is Akita at full winter: both the Ani and Tazawako ski areas are running, smelt fishing is open on Hachirogata, and kiritanpo, shottsuru and hatahata sushi are all on the table. Budget extra time for snow-delayed transfers.
February
5 itemsFebruary is the most reliable snow month: build the trip around Ani or Tazawako, keep Hachirogata smelt fishing as a half-day backup, and eat kiritanpo or shottsuru nabe. No fixed-date events to plan around, but blizzard cancellations happen.
March
5 itemsMarch is Akita's handover month: Hachirogata smelt fishing stops mid-month, while the Tazawako and Ani ski areas run to the end of March and beyond. Mt. Kanpuzan reopens late in the month, and kiritanpo nabe has its final weeks.
April
6 itemsLate April is the cherry-blossom peak at Kakunodate's samurai district and Kubota Castle, and the hardest time to book a room, so lock lodging early. The Akita Airport Liner restarts, Lake Tazawa cycling opens, and Ani's ski season ends mid-month.
May
6 itemsBlossoms at Kakunodate and Kubota Castle finish in early May and crowds drop right after. Goshogake Onsen up in Hachimantai opens for the season, Lake Tazawa cycling and Mt. Kanpuzan are both in range, and the Airport Liner saves a rental car.

6 itemsMt. Chokai's climbing season opens in June, and pairing it with Goshogake Onsen makes a clean hike-and-hot-spring loop. Yurihonjo rock oysters come into season. Lake Tazawa cycling is at its best, though rainy-season days call for an indoor backup.

8 itemsThe Tazawako Ryujin Matsuri and its fireworks over the lake are the one date to lock in July; the rest stays flexible. Mt. Chokai, the Lake Tazawa cycling loop, Kazuno peaches and rock oysters are all in season, and lodging is easier than August.

11 itemsAugust is Akita's busiest month: the Kanto Festival's main night, the Oga Nihonkai fireworks and the Omagari national fireworks competition stack up, and Omagari is all paid seating bought in advance. Lock rooms and tickets down well ahead.
September
8 itemsSeptember is the efficient month: crowds and rates normalise while Mt. Chokai's climbing season and Kazuno peaches both run out. New-crop Akitakomachi rice and Yokote apples take over, and Lake Tazawa cycling and Goshogake Onsen still run — watch typhoon risk.
October
7 itemsOctober is peak autumn colour and the last call for the mountain side: Goshogake Onsen, Lake Tazawa cycling and the Airport Liner all close at month's end. Kiritanpo nabe season starts, with new-crop rice and Yokote apples at their best.
November
7 itemsNovember is Akita's quiet gap: mountain facilities are closing down, though Mt. Kanpuzan is still open, and nothing is date-locked. Food carries the trip — hatahata, kiritanpo and shottsuru nabe, new rice, Yokote apples, and smelt fishing reopening on Hachirogata.

8 itemsDecember restarts the ski season as Ani and Tazawako open, though early-season snow can be thin, so come with a flexible plan. The food side is more certain: hatahata and hatahata sushi, kiritanpo and shottsuru nabe, plus Hachirogata smelt fishing.
